California Energy Commission (CEC) staff in collaboration with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) will conduct a workshop to learn about California customers’ microgrid implementation strategies and challenges with a focus on energy resiliency, renewable integration, costs/benefits performance, lessons learned, how cyber-security is being addressed and efforts to commercialize microgrids in California. This information will provide a technical foundation for the 2016 joint-agency effort to develop a microgrid roadmap for the commercialization of microgrids in California.
See below for information from the CEC-posted meeting notice. The agenda for the meeting is also available on the CEC’s website.
The workshop will be held:
Tuesday, September 6, 2016
Beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Secretary of State Building
1500 11th Street Auditorium
Sacramento, California
Wheelchair Accessible
Remote Access Available by Computer or Phone via WebEx™ (Instructions below)
Background
California’s electric grid must become more resilient and adaptable to climate change impacts such as increased fires, severe storms, and heat waves. Microgrids advance this goal because they are able to manage customer critical resources, provide services for the utility grid operator, disconnect from the grid when the need arises and provide the customer and the utility different levels of critical support when the need exists. Critical facilities such as fire stations, hospitals, military bases, and unified communities have indicated a need for the ability to better manage their energy needs as the California grid evolves to the smart grid of the future. The California Energy Commission supports the development of microgrids that incorporate clean, low-carbon energy resources with increased energy efficiency, the integration of distributed energy resources such as energy storage, distributed renewables, demand response and other advanced distributed energy systems. These microgrids will help the State of California achieve its carbon reduction goals and serve as models for integrating a range of technologies including renewables, electric vehicles and advanced generation systems into the larger grid. This Energy Commission staff workshop is to learn about California customer’s microgrid implementation strategies and challenges with a focus on energy resiliency, renewable integration, costs/benefits performance, lessons learned, how cyber-security is being addressed and efforts to commercialize microgrids in California. This information will provide a technical foundation for the 2016 joint-agency effort to develop a microgrid road map for the commercialization of microgrids in California. This workshop is one of a series of workshops that will be used to develop and publish the Joint Agency Roadmap to Commercialize Microgrids in California.
