ICLEI-USA is partnering with the Heinrich Boll Foundation to present a case study on just transitions for coal communities.
Over decades, coal mining and burning has played an important role for energy production in Germany and the US. The economy of many regions was dominated by coal for a long time. But with coal being less and less competitive, declining jobs and the coal sector being one of the biggest polluters, these communities in both countries now experience big changes and challenges. The Heinrich Boell Foundation fosters a transatlantic dialogue through study tours and discussion forums for community leaders in these regions to exchange about their experiences on adapting life after coal. They discuss strategies for economic development and solutions on reclaiming former coal sites to create a just transition for their communities. The short video “A Just Transition: The Way Forward for Coal Communities” shows the impressions of some US participants during a study tour to Germany.
