Contractor and market dynamics are slowing adoption of newer, more efficient technologies. Many plumbers and HVAC installers receive retroactive discounts or lump-sum payments from manufacturers when they hit volume thresholds, creating strong incentives to repeatedly install the same products and maintain entrenched vendor relationships. To reduce training and complexity, contractors often stick with a single manufacturer’s equipment—such as a preferred inverter brand—leading to one-size-fits-all installations that don’t meet specific building needs. In addition, many contractors remain unfamiliar with or skeptical of newer technologies like heat pumps, sometimes actively discouraging customers from considering them. Because homeowners and small businesses rely heavily on installer advice, this lack of awareness and bias against innovation significantly slows the transition to efficient, electrified systems.
