Mis- and disinformation complicate community recovery efforts and public understanding of resilience strategies: After the January fires, significant misinformation and disinformation spread about fire causes and recovery responsibilities. Even highly engaged residents experienced confusion about FEMA and recovery deadlines, risking exclusion from aid. Lack of clear, trusted communication channels between state, counties, NGOs, and communities hinders recovery coordination. Calls for state and NGO collaboration to “get around the noise” and establish a shared understanding before funding flows.
